Rotorsim was established in 2003 as a joint venture of Leonardo Finmeccanica and CAE to provide synthetic training solutions for AW109 Power and AW139 helicopter operators with CAE-built roll-on/roll-off (RORO) Level D full-flight simulators. Since then, Rotorsim has expanded to include AW109 LUH, AW109N, AW189, AW169 and NH90 training. The Rotorsim training centre in Sesto Calende, Italy is located within the Leonardo Finmeccanica Training Academy and currently houses six CAE-built Level D full-flight simulators with the most recent additions being the second AW139 and first AW189 and AW169 simulators. The cockpits for AW109 Power, AW109 LUH, AW109N and first AW139 can also be transferred into an additional fixed-based Flight Training Device (FTD) docking station.
Rotorsim is also offering NH90 training on an NH90 full-mission flight trainer (FMFT) that can be reconfigured between the NH90 Tactical Transport (TTH) variant as well as the NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) variant. The NH90 FMFT began training in late 2011 and is used to train both the Netherlands military as well as third party customers, which include the Royal Norwegian Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Rotorsim also has a multi-year responsibility for operation and maintenance services of the NH90 training systems.
Rotorsim also offers training in the USA on a CAE-built AW139 full-flight simulator located at CAE’s North East Training Centre near New York City.
Rotorsim continued to expand in 2016 when it added the world's first Level D AW169 full-flight simulator to the Rotorsim training centre in Italy. The CAE 3000 Series AW169 simulator obtained certification from both the ENAC (Ente Nazionale Aviazione Civile – Italian Civil Aviation Authority) and EASA. A second CAE 3000 Series AW189 simulator, designed specifically to support training for search and rescue operations, is now ready-for-training at Bristow Helicopter’s Training Centre facility at Dyce Airport, Aberdeen, UK.
