  • A significant challenge of technology development is how well humans will learn, use, and exploit the system. Human capabilities, limitations, skills and needs are considered in all phases of CAE's design and development lifecycle. Human system integration (HSI) is a multi-disciplinary field including human factors (HF), personnel, training, and system safety. CAE relies on HSI plans to ensure human requirements are considered within the design of every system integrated at all phases of development by way of an iterative user-centered design approach. CAE's HSI plans significantly reduce the lifecycle costs and ensure that the designs of our systems are efficient and usable.

Under the umbrella of HSI is Human Factors (HF) which is the practice that ensures users can operate and maintain systems to an optimized level of performance within a planned operational context. Our approach places emphasis on the needs of the end-user during the design, acquisition, or upgrade of a new system or capability. Our HF team looks beyond the physical design of the system to analyze the impacts of the system on personnel, planning, and training. The CAE HF team is a key differentiator in the development of successful systems that optimize and enhance human capabilities.

Some of the services we offer include:

    • Human Systems Integration Planning:  Develop HSI program plans for complex system development projects based on international standards from governmental organizations.
    • Task Analysis: The HF team relies on various task analysis methodologies to generate user-validated design requirements and inputs based on an in-depth understanding of the user, the work, and the environment to build an optimal system.
    • Interface and Workspace Design:  Collaborate with system designers to develop operator and maintainer interface style guides and detailed design of system interfaces, workspaces, operator stations, work environment layouts, and ship maintenance access spaces.
    • User Evaluations: Conduct virtual and live experiments to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of system interfaces, workspace layouts, and ship environment layouts using highly-structured iterative user evaluation methodologies.
    • Human Behaviour Modelling:  CAE is a leader in the application of human behaviour modelling techniques used to compare system performance, evaluate design alternatives for immersive and real ship simulations, and predict human performance and workload prior to virtual and field-based trials of real systems.
    • Simulation-based Design Reviews:  Our HF and modelling and simulation teams work together to develop visualizations of system designs in standalone or distributed synthetic environments for use in design reviews with future users to evaluate the system in the context of operational or support scenarios. Our in-house labs can be configured for simulation-based design reviews.

CAE has delivered human systems integration support to Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) in the definition phase and acquisition process of the new CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopter platform. The analysis performed by CAE will help save costs through an integrated approach to training needs analysis, system safety analysis, and human factors engineering.  In addition, the analysis and results will be used by DND for future design evaluations translating to further cost savings.
