C-130J MATS

As with any military aircraft platform, training plays a key role in preparing the aircrews to not only fly the aircraft, but also become "mission ready" for a combat environment. Training for C-130J crews is managed under a program called the C-130J Maintenance and Aircrew Training System (MATS). Lockheed Martin Simulation, Training, and Support (STS) is the prime contractor for the C-130J MATS program and CAE USA is the major subcontractor.

CAE has responsibility for the design and manufacture of all the USAF C-130J aircrew training devices, which include weapon system trainers (WSTs), avionics systems management trainer (ASMT), cockpit procedures trainer (CPT), fuselage trainer (FuT), and integrated cockpit systems trainers (ICSTs). CAE also provides software and integration support for the training devices required by C-130J maintenance personnel. These training devices include an engine and prop trainer (EPT) and flight control trainer (FCT).

The first C-130J WST for the USAF went to Keesler Air Force Base (AFB) in Mississippi, which CAE delivered in 2003 (the simulator came through Hurricane Katrina with very little damage). The following year, CAE delivered the USAF's second C-130J WST to the "C-130 Center of Excellence" - Little Rock AFB in Arkansas. Little Rock AFB is home to the 314th Operations Support Squadron, which has responsibility for overseeing the primary C-130 "schoolhouse" for the USAF. CAE has also delivered a CPT, EPT IOS, FuT, and ICST to the C-130 schoolhouse at Little Rock AFB, along with an additional C-130J WST. All have been declared "ready for training" on-time or ahead of schedule.

Designing and manufacturing all the C-130J training devices for the USAF, however, is not CAE's only role on the C-130J MATS program. Under subcontract from Lockheed Martin, CAE personnel at both Keesler AFB and Little Rock AFB provide a range of training support services, including simulator flight instruction, classroom instruction, maintenance services, and contractor logistics support.
