German NH90

The NH90 helicopter program is the largest ever launched in Europe, with firm orders now totaling over 500 helicopters. The single largest customer for the NH90 helicopter is the German Armed Forces. Between the German Army and German Air Force, Germany has 122 NH90 helicopters on order. In late 2008, Germany's flight training program for the NH90 will be enhanced with the opening of state-of-the-art flight training centres equipped with the first NH90 full-mission simulators.

In December 2004, Germany's government signed a private finance initiative (PFI) contract with an industry consortium to provide comprehensive NH90 training services. The industry consortium includes CAE, Thales, Eurocopter, and Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, who each own 25 percent of an operating company called Helicopter Flight Training Services (HFTS) GmbH. HFTS will have responsibility for delivering NH90 training services to the German Armed Forces through 2022 as well as other customers on a contract basis. The first of three NH90 training centres in Germany will open in 2008 at Bueckeburg, with the other two training centres at Fassberg and Holzdorf opening in 2009.

The design, development, and manufacture of NH90 training media for the three training centres has been ongoing since the PFI contract was signed. This design and development of NH90 training media, which includes the NH90 full-mission simulators, has been led by a joint venture called Helicopter Training Media International (HTMI). The HTMI joint venture is owned equally by CAE and Thales, two companies who are often fierce rivals, but have come together on the NH90 program to deliver world-class synthetic training media for the NH90 helicopter. Specifically, CAE has been responsible for the following:

  • CAE develops the real-time environment, tactical environment, navigation systems, general vehicle systems, communications/audio systems, electronic warfare, radio navigation, sound/audio, chaff/flare, meteorological simulation, support systems (briefing, debriefing, IOS, lesson planner), and weather radar -- all developed using CAE's STRIVE simulation development framework.
  • CAE is responsible for the facility network management and facility engineering environment.
  • CAE is providing the CAE Medallion™-6000 image generator hardware.
  • CAE has overall responsibility for integration and deployment. In addition, CAE was responsible for managing the design and construction of the training centre infrastructure in Bueckeberg, Holzdorf and Fassberg.
