By the time Airbus unveiled its super jumbo A380 in Toulouse, France, on January 18, CAE engineers were already flying the A380 simulator.

"We are very proud of this project. After final testing, the A380 simulator was delivered, as scheduled, to Airbus in April 2005 -- nearly a year before the aircraft's entry into service," said Michel Grenier, CAE's program director for the A380 simulator.

"The A380 is one of our most complex full-flight simulators. It can simulate about 400 malfunctions -- 150 more than a regular simulator. It is also equipped with CAE Tropos®, a visual system that uses satellite imagery of the entire planet to create realistic training scenarios for pilots."

Along with the prototype simulator, CAE will be delivering to Airbus a whole suite of CAE Simfinity® training devices specific to the A380: three-dimensional Maintenance/Flight Training Devices, as well as desktop devices and briefing / debriefing stations. As a result, Airbus pilots will be able to immerse themselves in a virtual A380 cockpit environment while still in the classroom before continuing their training on the full-flight simulator.

A second A380 simulator will be delivered to Airbus in November, in time to train the pilots of Singapore Airlines, the A380's launch customer. CAE has already begun production of more A380 simulators for Emirates and Qantas.
