DEMONSTRATIONS AT AAAA 2023

A training partner to the U.S. Army Aviation community, CAE is committed to delivering training services and solutions that enhance warfighter readiness. CAE is investing in technologies such as mission planning, adaptive learning, and deployable mission rehearsal solutions, and is developing capabilities specifically focused on preparing U.S. Army Aviators for the fight today and tomorrow. At AAAA 2023, we will demonstrate how we are leveraging digital technologies to enhance the safety, efficiency and mission readiness of our customers who operate in complex high-stakes, and largely regulated environments.

Bell has teamed with CAE in support of the U.S. Army’s Future Vertical Lift (FVL) Modernization Program, this includes the Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) and Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) programs

CAE in partnership with Bell have developed a CAE Sprint Virtual Reality (VR) trainer designed to introduce experienced aviators to the 360 Invictus and the V-280 Valor tiltrotor aircraft. The CAE Sprint VR trainer is equipped with physical flight controls - joystick, throttle, and rudder pedals, combined with physical cues boosted by haptics and seat vibration. By leveraging aircraft data directly from Bell’s digital thread, the CAE Sprint immersive virtual environment can be rapidly updated to reflect ongoing aircraft design changes as part of the U.S. Army’s Future Vertical Lift (FVL) Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) and Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) programs.

A demonstration of the CAE Sprint VR trainer in the FARA (360 Invictus) configuration can be seen in Bell booths #725 & #753.

CAE Immersive Maintenance Guide (IMG)

CAE’s Immersive Maintenance Guide is part of our +Tempo line of training products designed to enhance and accelerate maintenance training. It is constructed with detailed and interactive 3D graphics and is delivered either via tablet or in an immersive virtual reality environment through headsets. IMG provides access to the same +Tempo advanced courseware, which includes current technical order and Interactive Electronic Tech Manuals (IETMS) data. Benefits of IMG include accelerated skills acquisition, built in performance feedback, rapid ingestion of updated technical order data, and reduced need for live assets, to name a few. IMG brings effective maintenance training at the point of need and was proven on a CV-22 trial to increase student’s overall proficiency and confidence by 42%.

A demonstration of CAE’s virtual maintenance training capability using a FLRAA (V-280) maintenance task can be seen in Bell booths #725 & #753.

AH-64E Mixed Reality demonstration

CAE’s Mixed Reality (MR) demonstrator features a tandem configuration AH-64E cockpit that illustrates how chroma key technology is used to present the virtual world in flight simulation. The device is based on the existing AH-64E RCTD system fielded and in training today at Fort Novosel, AL. A COTS image generator is paired with a head-mounted display (HMD) that leverages video pass-through, automatic interpupillary distance adjustment and foveated rendering technology, allowing the pilot to see and interact with all cockpit hardware and other aircrew members while painting the virtual world around the cockpit.

This solution demonstrates a cost-effective, small footprint alternative to new and existing simulation visual systems. This type of mixed reality solution can be applied with no major device modifications beyond cockpit lighting, chroma key lighting and integrating an image generator node to drive the MR headset with modern IG software.

CAE Dothan Training Center (DTC)

The CAE Dothan Training Center, which officially opened in March 2017, is a 79,000 square-foot training facility designed to provide comprehensive fixed-wing flight training to the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and other customers.

Located at the Dothan Regional Airport in Dothan, Alabama, CAE and its team of industry partners use CAE’s Dothan Training Center and the adjacent Dothan Regional Airport to deliver live, virtual and constructive training.

The primary customer at CAE’s Dothan Training Center is the U.S. Army. Under the U.S. Army Fixed-Wing Flight Service program, CAE supports initial and recurrent training for transitioning Army rotary-wing aviators and Army initial-entry fixed-wing students. The program features academic, simulation and aircraft flight training, including the CAE Trax Academy which augments the current ground-based training assets with self-paced virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) training in both the C-12 and Grob G-120TP. CAE also provides Grob G-120 TP flight training devices and a suite of desktop trainers and courseware in addition to a fleet of C-12U King Air aircraft owned and maintained by the U.S. Army and operated by CAE instructors to deliver C-12 King Air aircraft flight training.

United States Army Advanced Helicopter Flight Training

CAE USA provides classroom, simulator, and live flying instructor support services for Army aviators training to fly the CH-47 Chinook, UH-60 Black Hawk, and AH-64 Apache helicopters. The flight training support services are provided at the U.S. Army’s Aviation Center of Excellence (USAACE) at Fort Novosel, Alabama. Once U.S Army aviators graduate from the Initial-Entry Rotary-Wing training program, they are assigned to continue training on one of the Army’s frontline combat helicopters or transition to fixed-wing training on the C-12 Huron. CAE USA provides the instructor pilots required to deliver the flight training to approximately 900 Army aviators annually transitioning to the CH-47 Chinook, UH-60 Black Hawk, or AH-64 Apache. CAE USA is also delivering additional flight training support services by providing maintenance examiners and non-rated crewmember flight engineers.

Along with our fixed-wing flight training program at the CAE Dothan Training Center, CAE now plays a pivotal role supporting the training of all Army aviators progressing to their assigned operational aircraft.
