Realistic, fully photo textured, 3D synthetic environments are at the heart of every visual system by providing the visual cues required to accomplish practical training tasks. CAE's synthetic environments are generated from extensive data collected from authoritative sources. Surveys, satellite and aerial imagery, on-site photography and digital data provided by various mapping agencies are all used to generate these highly accurate virtual worlds for military applications.

By combining geo-specific and geo-typical full-colour photo-texture to replicate topographical and cultural features, CAE’s synthetic environments provide exceptional levels of realism. Earth curvature effects, star models, sun and moon models, man-made features, weather and air hazards can all be added to each modelled environment.

Synthetic environments are composed of a variety of elements that combine to form a cohesive, realistic out-of-the-window scene. Dynamic textures ensure realistic animation effects like blowing snow and moving waves. Highly accurate terrain and feature positioning ensure exact duplication of any location. Sensor simulation and PC-based image generator images are all correlated with the synthetic environment so the trainee perceives all visual cues as part of a complete and integrated environment. Synthetic environments are available both in the native formats of each system, or in the latest Open Geospatial Consortium Common Database (OGC CDB) standard that provides a single data source shared by all systems. The OGC CDB ensures correlation across all systems and reduces the time to create databases for critical mission rehearsal applications.

Database Libraries

CAE offers one of the most extensive libraries of high-polygon density, fully photo-textured databases available in the industry today. Every database in CAE's library is modelled with accurate details, using specific photographs and correct terrain elevations. CAE is committed to helping preserve the value of customer database investments. By using a single data source for all synthetic environments, CAE ensures that all databases in the library are upward compatible with the latest generation image generators.  New databases are continually incorporated to reflect customer demands, resulting in an ever-expanding list of available databases.

Military Applications

CAE provides a myriad of features that can fulfill many types of military training requirements of various degrees of complexity.  Some of these include:

  • Nap of earth (NOE) flying over various terrain types down to 50 feet used for low level flying applications;
  • Helicopter formation flying;
  • Confined area landing (CAL sites) designed to allow helicopter pilots to manoeuvre in difficult and constrained areas (urban or forested);
  • Offshore platforms with landing deck;
  • For cargo training, drop zones with appropriate markings and unprepared strips for emergency landing;
  • Weapon ranges for fast jets that include bombing circles and strafing targets;
  • Underwater databases that are developed for both sonar and visual (camera) applications for a variety of training tasks such as anti-submarine warfare and mine hunting.

These features, combined with our extensive library of 3D moving objects and vehicles, allow users to quickly generate accurate training scenes and environments.  A library containing more than 4,000 buildings, trees and 3D features is available and can be applied to generate accurate and highly-detailed synthetic environments.  While satellite imagery can provide excellent image quality at altitude, it is often prohibitive to purchase imagery with a resolution capable of supporting low level flight. CAE has developed its motif technology to support these applications. Motif databases are generated by combining digital data sources that describe geographical and man-made features that are present in a particular area, for example, roads, forest, towns and rules that describe the appearance of that feature in a particular area of the world. These databases can be generated with a resolution and level of scene content to support flight down to ground level.
