CAE Healthcare today announced that its CAE ICCU e-Learning ultrasound curriculum will be integrated in the American College of Chest Physicians' (ACCP) critical care ultrasound training program. The CAE ICCU curriculum also will be a required component for healthcare practitioners wishing to acquire skills in critical care ultrasound and obtain certification from the ACCP.

"The ACCP ultrasound faculty is pleased to announce the integration of the CAE ICCU web-based system into the ACCP training program for critical care ultrasonography. The CAE e-Learning program, developed by Yanick Beaulieu, MD, is an exceptionally well-designed training system that provides the learner with deep cognitive training in the field," said Paul Mayo, MD, FCCP, Chair of the ACCP ultrasound courses. "The ACCP training sequence will now combine intensive training in image acquisition and image interpretation, portfolio collection, and the CAE ICCU e-Learning program to provide pulmonary/critical care clinicians with definitive training in critical care ultrasonography."

The CAE ICCU e-Learning curriculum is a unique and comprehensive resource developed by front-line intensive care physicians. It teaches healthcare practitioners working in acute and non-acute care environments how to perform a cardiac and non-cardiac ultrasound evaluation at the bedside. The CAE ICCU curriculum contains 14 hours of content, high quality 3D animations, clips and graphics, and more than 750 interactive questions. The content is delivered in an interactive multimedia format organized in multiple modules which allows participants to advance through the course at their own pace.

"We are pleased to assist the ACCP in setting a new standard for ultrasound skills training by providing widespread access to an innovative curriculum," said Guillaume Hervé, President of CAE Healthcare. "Bedside ultrasonography has widespread utility in the diagnosis and treatment of critical illness, and is a valuable tool for physicians working in acute care environments, such as intensive care, emergency medicine, trauma and anesthesiology. With proper training in ultrasonography, critical care physicians can achieve a high level of competence, reduce procedural times and avoid complications, which will ultimately result in better patient outcomes."

The ACCP has played a leading role in working towards defining competencies and standardizing the teaching and evaluation of critical care ultrasound. Most recently, the ACCP, along with the Société de Réanimation de Langue Française (SRLF), published a consensus statement "Statement on Competence in Critical Care Ultrasoungraphy" (CHEST 2009),  for achieving competence in the field of critical care ultrasonography. The ACCP is now working to establish a standardized training program, comprised of CAE Healthcare's interactive web-based multimedia-enhanced didactic curriculum, hands-on skill development course and practical training.
