CAE today announced it has been awarded a contract by Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) to provide the Canadian Coast Guard with a CAE 3000 Series helicopter simulator that will feature cockpits for both the Bell 412EPI and Bell 429 helicopters.

The CAE 3000 Series helicopter simulator will feature CAE’s revolutionary roll-on/roll-off cockpit design, which enables cockpits representing various helicopter types to be used in the full-flight simulator. The Canadian Coast Guard, which is part of Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, will acquire cockpits for both the Bell 412EPI and Bell 429 helicopters, which are used by the Canadian Coast Guard for maritime security and other fisheries activities.

“Our new fleet of helicopters enhances the Coast Guard’s ability to keep Canadians safe and further protect our waters,” said Jody Thomas, Canadian Coast Guard Commissioner. “The unique and advanced helicopter flight simulator will play a key role in ensuring the Coast Guard crews who fly very demanding missions in some of the harshest conditions are trained and wellprepared.”

The CAE 3000 Series Bell 412/429 helicopter simulator will be delivered in 2018 to Transport Canada’s training centre in Ottawa. The simulator will be one of the most advanced helicopter simulators ever developed and will be qualified to Level D, the highest qualification for flight simulators. The CAE 3000 Series Bell 412/429 simulator for the Canadian Coast Guard will include a 12-foot dome display with extreme field-of-view display system and high-fidelity CAE Medallion-6000 visual system, which will allow the Coast Guard to conduct highly realistic virtual training for tasks such as long line and sling load operations.

By using CAE’s full-flight simulator “mothership” featuring a roll-on/roll-off cockpit design, the Canadian Coast Guard will receive one full-flight helicopter simulator with a common six degreeof-freedom motion system, vibration platform, and visual solution. The cockpits specifically representing the Bell 412EPI and Bell 429 helicopters will be used interchangeably in the fullflight simulator. When one cockpit is in the full-motion, full-flight simulator, the other cockpit can be connected to a docking station and used as a fixed-base flight training device.

“We are pleased the Canadian Coast Guard selected CAE in this highly competitive procurement to design and develop its first-ever full-flight simulator,” said Mike Greenley, Vice President and General Manager, CAE Canada. “CAE will develop a highly innovative and advanced training system that will significantly enhance the Coast Guard’s ability to train for a range of missions, and enable it to transfer a significant amount of required training to the simulator. The comprehensive synthetic environment we will deliver with the Bell 412/429 simulator will push the boundaries of creating an immersive and realistic virtual world for Coast Guard helicopter training.”
