The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), an international standards consortium supporting interoperable solutions, recently approved the Common Database (CDB) as an OGC Best Practice. The move paves the way for the continued proliferation of the CDB as the preferred architecture for creating and maintaining simulation-based synthetic environments to be used for geospatial applications as well as training, mission rehearsal and decision-support.
“As simulation programs continue to develop into larger and more diverse Live, Virtual, Constructive and Gaming (LVC-G) networks, the use of internationally-recognized open standards becomes absolutely critical for successfully integrating and interoperating within a common synthetic environment,” said Marc St. Hilaire, CAE’s Chief Technology Officer. “We have long been a strong proponent of the CDB and believe it provides the foundation for enabling capabilities such as distributed mission operations and training. We are pleased the Open Geospatial Consortium has recognized the value and benefits of the CDB.”
By identifying the CDB as an OGC Best Practice, the OGC believes the application of the CDB to future synthetic environment architectures can help reduce database correlation errors while significantly cutting database development, update, and configuration management timelines. As part of the OGC CDB Standards Working Group, CAE will be continuing to work with other OGC members, including industry, universities and government agencies, to develop candidate OGC CDB standards. These standards will then be considered by the OGC Technical Committee as full OGC standards.
The CDB was originally designed and developed by CAE for the United States Special Operations Command to support rapid mission rehearsal timelines using high-fidelity simulation. Following the initial development, the CDB specification has been openly and publicly available, and managed by Presagis, a global leader in commercial-off-the-shelf simulation software.
