Canadian Remotely Piloted Aircraft System Program (RPAS)

My current role at CAE Defense & Security (Canada) is Program Leader of the RPAS Canada Program, which is explicitly related to CAE’s workshare as the largest subcontractor on Team SkyGuardian. I initially supported the program, starting in early 2022, during the pre-contract proposal development phase, helping to finalize plans for solutions, costs, resources, and scheduling. 

I began my career with CAE in early 2020, when I was given the opportunity to join the Maritime Helicopter Program Integrated Information Environment (MHP IIE) as a Project Manager (PM).  This was a domain shift for me from aircraft maintenance to Information Technology (IT) in response to the limited project management (PM) opportunities in Aviation in Atlantic Canada. Before immigrating to Canada in 2017, I served in the British Army for 16 years as a Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Officer in the United Kingdom.  I have since relocated to the Ottawa area after taking on the RPAS Program. 

The Program Leader role is endlessly challenging; therefore, no two days are the same. Professionally, it has been a step up in terms of scope and complexity, as well as managing a larger resource pool, and, naturally, much higher budgets.  I also really enjoy the fact that the subject of the program is leading-edge technology, both in terms of the actual MQ-9B platform and of the broader RPAS domain.  It makes the work more exciting; however, as with all domains, the technology's rate of change is rapid, so the fluidity of requirements presents an additional challenge.

Working as the Chief Instructor for the Mission Crew for the past 12 months and at CAE for 2 years has been an absolute pleasure. Having spent 24 years in the Royal Air Force as a Qualified Rear-Crew Instructor, delivering Phase 2 and frontline MQ-9A instruction, I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of RPAS operators. I am honoured to be able to directly influence and support the introduction of the new MQ-9B capability to Canada's defence.   

Our training team produces high-quality training analysis and design documentation that supports the highest level of instruction for RCAF personnel. Our team's attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction is evident in every aspect of our work. I take immense pride in being an integral member of the Canadian RPAS program team. Their professionalism, expertise, and dedication to delivering top-notch results to our customers are truly commendable.

As the Technical Integration Leader, I ensure the seamless integration of technical components within defence programs. My role involves consolidating the design of individual elements, such as courseware, learning materials, and synthetic training devices, into a cohesive training solution that exceeds customer expectations. 

I joined CAE two years ago after 13 years in the Royal Air Force as an MQ-9A Pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor. In this short time, I have been deeply impressed by the team ethos and camaraderie among my colleagues, each bringing unique skills and experiences to the table. CAE fulfills the role of a training services provider with pride, and the people - their commitment, professionalism, and innovation - make this happen.  

Upon leaving the Service, I wanted to continue making a positive impact on defence and the future of RPAS training and capability. Although I am no longer in an instructional role, I am still able to do so on a daily basis. I am incredibly proud of the specialized support that CAE provides the Royal Canadian Air Force as they introduce the MQ-9B and optimize this new capability.

As the In-Service Support Project Manager, I’ve had the privilege of supporting this groundbreaking initiative since its inception in 2024. As the Deputy Senior Maintenance Manager for the Canada RPAS Program with CAE, I’m proud to support the operational readiness and long-term sustainment of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian for the Royal Canadian Air Force. With over 21 years of service as an avionics technician and maintenance manager in the RCAF, followed by 15 years of embedded contracted maintenance support, I bring a deep understanding of military technical airworthiness standards, mission-critical maintenance, and collaborative defence partnerships. 

Joining CAE in early 2024 at the launch of the Canada RPAS contract has allowed me to apply my experience in a dynamic, forward-looking environment where innovation and excellence are central to supporting Canada’s air power. I’m excited to help build a diverse and capable team of aircraft technicians and support personnel to deliver industry-leading maintenance for both the remotely piloted aircraft and Ground Control Stations.
