At CAE, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is integral to who we are as a company and how we make a difference in the world. CSR is embedded in our culture, and drives our decisions and actions.

Over fiscal year 2020, we saw many of our plans and intentions become realities, and are now laying the ground for future CSR initiatives and improvements.

10,000 ventilators to fight against COVID-19

To help in the fight against COVID-19, our CAE Healthcare engineers and scientists designed in 11 days a simple, maintainable, easy-to-manufacture ventilator prototype to provide life support to patients in intensive care. On April 7, the Prime Minister of Canada announced that the Govenment of Canada had put in an order for the development and production of 10,000 CAE ventilators to be produced in an accelerated process.

CAE designed and succeeded to have the CAE Air1 ventilator certified in a fraction of the usual time. Over 500 CAE employees from 45 departments worked intensily on the project during the months preceeding certification and more than 130 Canadian suppliers were chosen to be a part of this made-in-Canada ventilator project. After obtaining certification, CAE started shipping CAE Air1 ventilators to the Government of Canada every week.

CAE announces its plan to become carbon neutral in Summer 2020

On November 28, 2019, President and CEO Marc Parent announced CAE’s commitment to become carbon neutral in Summer 2020 at a Montreal Council on Foreign Relations (CORIM) event, making us the first aerospace company in Canada to take this stance. We will achieve this goal by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates and Carbon Offset Certificates for the fuel used for all the live training flights of our academies, for energy consumption in our locations worldwide and for business air travel of all our employees. As Marc stated in his CORIM address, “I believe this is a collective responsibility and that companies have a role to play. They must link their financial results with the impact of their activities that benefit the community. That is what CAE is doing today.”

More than C$1 million for Centraide of Greater Montreal (United Way)

CAE has raised more than one million dollars ($1,015,015) in its 2019 CAE-Centraide (United Way) fundraising campaign, which were collected through employee donations and a corporate donation.

CAE and Unifor Local 522 have led campaigns for Centraide for many years and have been commended by 10 Centraide Solidaires Awards, which recognize the excellence and outstanding results of their campaigns. Since 2000, CAE and its employees have donated $12.6 million to Centraide of Greater Montreal.

In addition to Centraide, CAE supports the communities in which it operates through several donations and sponsorships that mainly support causes in education, civil aviation, defence, security and healthcare.

Data ethics principles

In addition to identifying and assessing data-related risks, CAE adopted, in 2019, ethical principles for the responsible use of data analytics to better manage risks associated with new technologies. We adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct in our dealings with employees, customers and all other stakeholders in our ecosystem. These principles are also a commitment to go beyond what is legally required to protect CAE’s and its stakeholders' data.

CSR governance

Launched in fiscal 2016, our cross-functional CSR Committee is responsible for rolling out and embedding CSR commitments and best practices across CAE. It is also in charge of identifying, reviewing and assessing our performance in ethical, environmental, social and reputational matters. The committee includes members from our three core businesses (Civil Aviation Training Solutions, Defence & Security and Healthcare) as well from engineering, corporate services, and three members from our Executive Management Committee.
