Analytics and systems engineering

Enabling Technologies

Today’s defense and security forces around the world are shifting their strategy to focus on near-peer threats. This requires rapid digital technologies, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, synthetic environments, and virtual worlds to maintain power advantage, and no other company is better positioned than CAE to assist in preparation for missions. As a high tech company, CAE is investing in enabling technologies to support our customer’s critical mission requirements.

Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning

As a high-tech company, CAE combines leading-edge digital technologies that use AI and ML algorithms to provide systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from continued use and experience. We have over 2,500 engineers and technical experts and a team at the cutting edge of digital solutions leveraging advancements in AI, cloud computing, immersive synthetic environments, adaptive learning and much more. For example, recent innovations such as the CAE Trax Academy, CAE Sprint Virtual Reality Trainer, and Adaptive Learning are helping transform and streamline military pilot training.

Advanced Analytics

Analysis is required to support the entire lifecycle of defense and security critical infrastructures and systems. Throughout the lifecycle of a system, analysis is applied to a broad range of activities, including requirements definition and validation, concept development, system design, options analysis, bid evaluation, and mission-scenario planning.

CAE provides user-centred, simulation-based advanced analysis to support capability and operational planning, the acquisition cycle, systems engineering programs, and design and development. Our analysis support follows documented methodologies that engage the full range of stakeholders and investigate the impact of alternative concepts, designs, requirements, and decisions on human/system performance, training, and personnel.

Science of Learning

CAE is continually innovating in the science of learning. Traditional teaching and learning methodologies alone are no longer sufficient to train today’s digitally-enabled learners. While new approaches to learning and advances in training technology are key enablers of this  paradigm shift in training, the net output of any integrated training system must still be a fully qualified, engaged, and capable military workforce ready to take on its role within their respective crew.

CAE’s innovative training tools, technologies, and processes can help build a resilient and operationally ready workforce. Among these, CAE’s closed-loop training, which matches technology enabled training with the potential of real time learning/performance analytics, ensures efficiencies and benefits across the entire training continuum.

During closed-loop training, software and hardware automatically measure student’s responses and performance against required standards. Common performance-based metrics are captured regardless of the physical location where necessary tasks, sub-tasks, or task elements are performed. The system customizes training material in real time to maximize its effectiveness for the individual trainee, focusing their time and attention where responses are weak. A data repository system stores all results, facilitating prompt feedback to trainees, instructors, and other stakeholders through appropriate hardware and software analytics. Analysis of trends back to training designers results in continuous improvement of training.

Test & Experimentation

As a high-tech company, CAE combines enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analysis and synthetic environments to help solve our customer’s most complex problems. We provide synthetic environments to experiment and test scenarios, systems, concepts, processes, and doctrines against a hypothesis, or before acquisition or operation. These can be performed at a small scale such as on a subsystem for a particular platform, or at a large scale like planning for joint and multi-domain operations. CAE’s enabling technologies provide the information represented in a simplified environment to our customers so they can make decisions more effectively and more rapidly. For example, CAE's GESI is a constructive simulation system designed to run complex and comprehensive joint and combined exercises at both tactical and operational levels. The system can be used for testing and experimentation as well as training and mission rehearsal.
