Simulators Common Architecture Requirements and Standards

CAE USA is the prime contractor on the Air Force's Simulators Common Architecture Requirements and Standards (SCARS) program, which is designed to provide the Air Force an Enterprise Solution that implements use of a common, cyber-resilient infrastructure specifically designed to support the Joint Synthetic Environment and Distributed Mission Operations training across all Air Force Major Weapons Systems.

CAE USA is leading the development of the SCARS enterprise which includes common architectural design standards, common computational technology applications, and a user development toolkit to support implementation and use of common technology applications to rapidly increase warfighter readiness. SCARS will provide the warfighter with an inter-connected, cyber-resilient, multi-level security synthetic environment supported using common, best-of-breed synthetic applications for all Air Force legacy, 5th Generation, and 6th Generation synthetic mission training. The SCARS Enterprise includes 2,400+ USAF simulators across 300 locations.

Additionally, CAE USA is contracted to act as an integrator of Joint Synthetic Environment (JSE) for the USAF and USN. In this integrator role, the JSE team requested that CAE USA utilize our SCARS expertise as a complimentary effort to make JSE available to a wider audience via the SCARS infrastructure. Achieving this objective will require deep analysis and thorough understanding of the JSE technology stack so that it can be packaged into a virtualized version, without loss of fidelity, and continuing to support the warfighter test and training missions.

B-2 Training System

As the prime contractor for the U.S. Air Force’s B-2 training system program, CAE USA provides continuous full-spectrum training support for the B-2 that encompasses a full range of capabilities. CAE USA’s team of specialists supports all aircrew and maintenance training devices, including system software, hardware, courseware, classroom, and academic instruction.

Key features of the B-2 training system

  • Three full-motion, high-fidelity B-2 full-mission simulatorsfor initial and continuation aircrew operator training and combat mission rehearsal training;
  • B-2 mission trainer, a high-fidelity simulator designed to teach complex right-seat functions such as radar operation and weapons delivery;
  • Suite of maintenance training devicesto help maintainers, pilots and weapon load technicians gain off-aircraft expertise in the diagnosis and repair of aircraft systems and weapons loading;
  • B-2 computerized maintenance training systems, including a simulated flight crew station, hydraulics/fuels maintenance station, instructor station and student station;
  • B-2 training aids—desktop trainers fully integrated with simulated aircraft functionality to provide detailed training scenarios;
  • B-2 cockpit procedures trainerconsisting of a high-fidelity, full-scale cockpit, enabling aircrews to hone their skills on aircraft systems operations and procedures;
  • The B-2 weapons loading trainer, a full-scale mock-up of the aircraft’s undercarriage, weapons bay and cockpit, for certifying personnel in uploading and downloading nuclear and conventional weapons onto the B-2.

Sentinel

CAE USA supports prime contractor Northrop Grumman on the Sentinel program. The Sentinel program is led by the U.S. Air Force for the purpose of developing the next generation intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as a nuclear deterrent. Under subcontract to Northrop Grumman, we are now developing the missile systems training capabilities required at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, and Vandenberg AFB, California, for the Sentinel program.

To help ensure Sentinel has the best trained operators for this complex weapons system, we will develop and support operations, maintenance and security forces training. The comprehensive training solution will include a collective trainer for leadership decision making that will feature simulation of an advanced situational awareness environment. This modernized system aims to provide solid reliability while maintaining safe deterrence capabilities to respond to future threats.

CAE Joint Terminal Control Training Rehearsal System (JTC-TRS)

The JTC TRS is a mission critical simulation system used to train new Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC) to provide close air support by controlling aircraft weapons delivery on enemy forces. It is a fully immersive system enabling JTACs to train for complex missions in a simulated and controlled environment. The JTC TRS training system offers three configurations for JTAC training: a 270-degree field of view projected dome, a desktop configuration with flat screens, and a deployable configuration with a small footprint for individual training. Our dome and desktop configurations are Distributed Mission Operations Network (DMON) capable and provide pilot and instructor stations as well as emulated military equipment to enhance the training environment. Additionally, JTC TRS system includes the Joint Theater Air-Ground Simulation System (JTAGSS), which provides a live-virtual-construction and DMON enabled training environment for Air Support Operations Center personnel to coordinate air delivered fires on the battlefield.
