CAE Melbourne partners with Swinburne University of Technology to deliver this program for Jetstar. The Jetstar Cadet Pilot Program is an integrated flying training, flight theory and education program taking trainee pilots with zero or little flying experience* from ab initio to First or Second Officer positions within Jetstar Airways. It is a cadet pilot program whereby successful applicants will be offered a conditional offer of employment as a pilot by Jetstar Airways, subject to successful completion of the program.
This is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring pilots to train under the mentorship of Jetstar and go on to fly as First or Second Officers with the airline.
*this program is not open to current CPL licence holders. Previous flight training experience will only be recognised if it was undertaken as a part of an integrated CPL program.
The Jetstar Cadet Pilot Program is an integrated academic and flight training program taking trainee pilots from zero experience through to being ready for employment as a Cadet Pilot with Jetstar Airways. Subject to successful completion of the entire academic and flying program and other commercial needs of the airline, successful applicants will be entering a course that includes a conditional offer of employment as a pilot with Jetstar Airways.
The program consists of two phases:
Ab initio training up to and including Commercial Pilot License with Multi-Engine Instrument Rating and Multi-Crew Cooperation Training and ATPL Theory.
Cadet pilots will complete Phase One of the Program with CAE Melbourne and Swinburne University of Technology, enrolling in the Swinburne Associate Degree of Aviation.
Type Endorsement on an Airbus A320 or Boeing B787 aircraft on successful completion of Phase One.
After successful completion of Phase One of the Jetstar Cadet Pilot Program, cadets will have the following qualifications:
Associate degree of aviation
The Associate Degree of Aviation is approximately 18 months in duration, incorporating full-time academic studies (including study throughout Winter and Summer Terms), pilot licence theory, and flight training. It is designed for applicants with little or no flying experience who wish to gain an academic qualification in an efficient way, in addition to pilot licence theory and flight training.
The academic units within the Associate Degree of Aviation are delivered by Swinburne University of Technology and the flying training and associated theory are delivered by CAE. Please visit the courses section of the Swinburne website for more information on units of study.
Where do I study?
Throughout University Semesters 1 and 2, students will spend three or four days a week at CAE, Moorabbin Airport undertaking Pilot specific Aviation Studies and Aviation Practical Studies (flying training) and one day a week at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus, undertaking Aviation Technology, Aviation Human Factors and Air Transportation Management studies.
During the winter and summer terms, all studies will be at CAE, Moorabbin Airport.

Eligible students can elect to access FEE-HELP for the Associate Degree of Aviation.
This will allow you to offset your flying training fees through the government loans system. A maximum lifetime FEE-HELP limit applies, indexed annually; In 2017 the FEE-HELP limit is AUD$100,879.

Selection Phase 1: Preliminary Screening
Your application will be reviewed by our assessment team against the application prerequisites. The assessment team will also review your experience and motivations for wanting to undertake the program. On conclusion of this review you may be invited to participate in Step 2 -the Skills Assessment process.
Selection Phase 2: Skills Assessment Process
The Skills Assessment is a two part process normally conducted over two days as outlined below:
Part 1: ADAPT online assessment
The purpose of this assessment is to find out if you are right for a job with the airline: There are a number of elements that can make up the ADAPT Online package and you will be required to complete a selected combination of the following elements:
If you meet the required benchmark standard in each test and overall you will be invited to participate in Part 2 of the Skills Assessment process.
Please note: An assessment fee of approximately $150 will apply.
Part 2: Group exercises and interview
The group exercises test your skills in problem solving, verbal reasoning, communication, team work and group discussion.
The group exercises are followed by a 20 minute individual behavioural based interview with at least 2 assessors. The interview is designed to examine the candidate’s motivation and suitability for a career in commercial aviation.
If you are selected as a successful candidate at the end of the Skills Assessment process, you will progress to Step 3.
Selection Phase 3: Jetstar Panel Interview
Candidates who have successfully completed Step 2 will be referred to Jetstar for a final panel interview. This interview is conducted by Jetstar personnel and the interview may cover all aspects of steps 1 and 2 plus an emphasis on motivation and cultural fit with Jetstar.
To prepare for enrolment in any aviation program, it is advisable to research the CASA website to understand the process of obtaining a Pilot Licence. It is also recommended to obtain an Aviation Reference Number (ARN) and CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate as these are pre-requisites to commencing flight training.
If you have never flown before, you are encouraged to undertake a Trial Introductory Flight (TIF) with CAE to get a better understanding what is involved in training to become a professional pilot.
